Excerpt:su (Switch User)One of the features of Linux is the ability to change userid whenlogged into a system. This command su is sometimes referred to assuperuser, however this is not completely correct. In the early daysof UNIX it was only possible to change to the root user, which madefor the superuser command however it is now possible tochange to anyuser using the su command. It is more correct to refer to the command as the switch user command. The switch user command su is used to change between differentusers on a system, without having to logout. The most common use isto to change to the root user, but it can be used to switch to anyuser depending upon the users settings. To switch to a different userother than root, then the username is used as the last option on thecommand. It is also possible to change to another user by putting the usernameafter the su command. There are two ways of switching users. Byputting a ' -' after the command will cause the users profile to beread and variables to be set.
Without the ' -' the previous userssettings will still remain. To use the new users profile and variables su - usernameTo continue with the current profile and variables su usernameyou can then return to the previous user by entering exit.
We have about 25 laptops in the field with AT&T 3G WWAN cards (Ericsson F3507G or Qualcomm Gobi 2000), and I need to collect and log the IMEI numbers for each one, in addition to the ICC ID (SIM ID) and the phone number. The laptops all run Windows 7, and so far I can not figure out where this information is stored. It is accessible if you right-click on the AT&T mobile broadband connection in the systray, and choose properties, but I can't find it using the systeminfo command or msinfo32, and I can't find any reference of a known IMEI number in the registry. If you look in device manager sometimes you will not see it until it is turned on, some are not by default. So with Vaio notebooks if it's not turned on (activated to be detected) until you hit the button and then it appears in Device Manager. With Dell's it's not seen until it's installed and if it's a Sprint card it must be on.The same with HP Mini'sWhat you could do is script it out of the registry, for AT&T it'sHKCUSoftwareATTRoamingClientWanalsoHKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionTelephonyCardsCardxx = a number 1,2,3. Incase anyone finds this as often as I did.I took it a step furthur using powershell to filter the output of netsh.
Kinda kludgey but seems like it works (on Lenovo T450 with Sierra Wireless cards. You may need to adjust your select-string and substring parameters to weed the IMEI out of your brand/model of cards:$data = netsh mbn sh int select-string 'device id'$txt = $data.toString$imei = $txt.SubString(25,15)or a one-liner.((netsh mbn sh int select-string 'device id').toString).Substring(25,15). Hmm, neither of those registry locations exist. Perhaps they only exist if the AT&T connection manager is installed, but since the release of Windows 7 we don't use it. Windows actually is more reliable in managing the WAN connection than AT&T's software! There is no problem getting the device to appear in Device Manager, it is already listed.
I just want to be able to grab the IMEI, ICCID and Phone # if available from laptops with a script. I could ask each remote user to visit the properties window themselves but they are not very technical and I would prefer to automate the process if possible. Hi Wes623Unfortunately I am not with the company that I wrote this script for anymore so I don't have access to the full version. If I remember correctly though, the only other part of the script was to launch this section and pipe the output to a txt file, so hopefully that would be fairly simple to figure out. For whatever reason, it would not actually record the output without the strange looking try and catch portion at the bottom of the script: I think I ended up going with the vbscript as a wrapper because I could not find a simpler way to actually capture the output from the COM port without doing so.Good luck!Kind Regards, wktmeow.
